How to Prepare for Emergencies

Posted: 4/22/2013 8:00:00 AM

Last week, we watched as several different emergencies hit our nation. Among these emergencies was the West, Texas fertilizer plant explosion. The explosion tragically killed 14 people and injured 200 more. At least 80 homes were damaged in the emergency.

Here in the Oxford Hills, we may not have a fertilizer plant out our backdoor, but we do have our share of potential disasters. While we often can’t prevent those disasters from happening, preparedness can change the outcome of such an emergency for our families.

How to Celebrate Earth Day All Day

Monday is Earth Day. In our busy lives, creating environmentally friendly habits can seem like too much of a hassle. Making little changes, however, can make a big difference. Try incorporating some of these activities into your routine this Earth Day.

It’s that time of the year again! Time for a Cash Mob. Whether you’ve gone before or you’re a first time mobber, join us Saturday the 27th for Western Maine Cash Mobs first mob of the year!

What is a Cash Mob?

Think of a “Cash Mob” as a sort of “flash mob.” The major difference? You’re “mobbing” a local business with sales. Mobbers are provided with a date, time, and meeting place and instructed to bring $20 with them. Once everyone arrives, the chosen place of business is revealed and mobbers all make their way to that location, ready to stimulate their local economy.

Cash Mobs also help create community interaction. In addition to spending $20 at a local business, mobbers are also asked to meet 3 new people from their community.

As a 20-something-year-old, I can’t say I’ve ever thought much about estate planning. It’s a task for some distant day in the future, right? After reading this article, however, I started singing a different tune. Someday, I will die and there’s no way I can predict when. Estate planning is a task I should start looking into now, not later.

With that in mind, I had a little conversation with Linda Russell of Oxford Hills Law. She addressed some of my own questions about estate planning.
