People are rarely enthused when they receive their Maine car insurance premiums, but at least Maine residents have some of the lowest premiums in the country!  This is pleasant news, being that there are plenty of other things that are relatively expensive in the state of Maine!

A recent report released by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners ranked Maine the 6th lowest in the nation in automobile insurance affordability.  Maine’s average yearly auto insurance premium in 2009 (the most recent year for nationwide data) was approximately $682; which ranks it the lowest in all of the New England States – lower than Massachusetts!  The NAIC tracks average costs associated with personal automobile insurance nationwide. Its latest report features state-by-state auto insurance data designed to provide necessary information and analysis to insurance regulators, consumers and policymakers.

In order to make sure that you have the right tools when it comes to getting the best rate on your Maine car insurance, the Bureau of Insurance offers a variety of publications, including a “Consumer’s Guide to Auto Insurance,” and a brochure outlining “Ten Things You Should Know Before Buying Auto Insurance.” Publications can be found online under “Brochures” on the Bureau’s website. Copies can also be requested, and personal assistance obtained, by calling the Maine Bureau of Insurance toll-free at 1-800-300-5000.
