Nezinscot Valley Music Boosters
The Nezinscot Valley Music Boosters existed in SAD #39 many years ago, but had died out until 2006 when Hartford-Sumner Elementary music director Meghan Andrews-Wright started the group again with the help of parent/teacher/community volunteers. The group’s mission is to provide musical and performing arts enrichment opportunities to the students of Buckfield, Hartford and Sumner. They strive to bring culturally diverse and professional performers and opportunities to the students several times each year as well as sponsor a number of community arts events.
The Music Boosters hold annual events including the “Nezinscot Valley Chili and Chowder Cook-Off”: a cook-off and night of free bluegrass music with the band Tricky Britches in the fall where community members can taste the chili and chowder and vote for their favorite. They also host the annual Nezinscot Valley Holiday Craft Fair held annually at Buckfield High School on the first Saturday of December from 9-2 which consistently draws over 80 crafters and vendors. The 2013 Fair will be December 7th.
In the schools, the Boosters sponsor the annual elementary spring school-wide cultural theme where students experience the music/dance of a culture. The event culminates with a community pot-luck dinner, and free concert in the gymnasium. They help with music and drama department needs not covered by the school budget. (Recent examples include marching band jackets, wireless microphones for the drama department, a new digital piano, curtains for the high school stage and risers.) The Boosters run the concessions at the spring musical at Buckfield Jr./Sr. High School – this year’s show “West Side Story” runs March 29th & 30th ay 7PM / April 5th & 6th at 7PM and April 7th @ 2PM. Tickets are $5 adults/seniors and $8 adults and are available at the Buckfield High School Main Office (207.336.2151 for reservations.)
